Recital with piano accompaniment presenting 20th and 21st century music for clarinet. Along with Luca’s “Sonate”, the programme includes music by Luciano Berio and re-arrangements of music by Puccini and Vivaldi or of Broadway classics by Gershwin, Churchill and Kurt Weil.The performance presents new and challenging music published in the album “Neapolis”, written/arranged by Luciano, that is unique and varied, notated and “composed in real time” (improvised), that embraces romantic atmospheres and contemporary idioms, experimentation and heartfelt melodies.
Though Luca’s exceptional virtuoso skills are clearly evident, the music has always a distinctive melodic sense influenced by the Western European tradition and his Neapolitan heritage. Due to its variety and melodic taste, the repertoire has proven to be appreciated by a wide range of music lovers who are also after something different and stimulating.

“Clarinet Solo Project”

This project is part of an on-going academic research on extended techniques for the contemporary repertoire and new music for solo clarinet. The core of the performance is made of the two “Sequenze” written/arranged by Luciano (premiered at the Bristol Cathedral in 2009 and published in the album “Partenope”) and Luciano Berio’s “Lied” along with re-arrangements of music by Puccini, George Gershwin, Vivaldi and the Stravinsky’s “Three Pieces” as an encore. During the performance the clarinet is pushed to the edge using a wide range of styles and expressions on music both written and composed in real time (improvised). Luciano tries in this remarkable journey to embrace all styles of music he loves in an imaginative tour around the world from Western European music to Afro-American or folkloristic music of the South of Italy, from contemporary classical music with chromatic and angular-shaped melodies to heartfelt melodies. The performance also displays the potential of the instrument endorsed by Luciano (with extra keys and rings) that has attracted much interest from critics and clarinet enthusiasts. The solo project is also combined to a master-class or it is included in a programme that presents more ensembles/artists.

“Quarteto Tau with Luca Luciano”

Luca first performed with the Quarteto Tau in March 2010 as their special guest during a concert at the Capela PUC in Sao Paulo (Brazil) where they also played “Debussyana” by Garoto. The collaboration went on in 2011 with the premiere of Divertimento #5 “Concertando com o Tau” written by Luca and dedicated to them. The quartet has a strong commitment to expanding the guitar repertoire and this projects marks the collaboration between musicians who share a belief in contemporary art.

“Duo Saraiva-Murray with Luca Luciano”

Born from the idea of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the death of Heictor Villa-Lobos, the trio (featuring Brazilian guitarists Chico Saraiva and Daniel Murray) presents a repertoire where the Brazilian and the European tradition meet. The programme includes re-arrangements of pieces by Villa-Lobos as a homage to the great Brazilian composer along with original material that includes notated and improvised music and music by Gismonti, Jobim.

Since moving to the UK, Luca has been invited by universities, colleges and conservatoires in Great Britain and overseas on a regular basis (Cambridge University, Glasgow University, Newcastle University and Reading University in the UK, Sao Paulo University and the Faculty of Santa Marcelina in Brazil, etc) to share his experience as a contemporary musician and he also held the only position of jazz-clarinet lecturer in the country for many years making him one of the few specialist of both classical and jazz at HE level.

An appendix of the ”Clarinet Solo Project”, his lecture-recital and demonstration of the potential of the clarinet are also informed by his research on extended techniques for the contemporary repertoire and new music for solo clarinet. The event (also held in Portuguese and Italian) is aimed at musicians, composers and music enthusiasts of all level and of all walk of life. Whilst spreading Luca’s research and findings, the main idea of this event is to inspire young musicians and get them familiarised with the contemporary clarinet techniques and their potential within the music of today.

The event will be articulated as follows:

- Performance of Luca’s Sequenza #1 for solo clarinet from the album Partenope or demonstration of the possibilities of the clarinet within a wide range of music genres from mainstream jazz or classical to more experimental and avant-garde (e.g. classical and contemporary classical, Dixieland, 40s swing, be-bop, post-bop/free jazz, tarantella/folk/world music, etc.) thanks to its acoustic characteristics, dynamic range and extention;

- Brief Lecture Paper, presenting the music and its aesthetics and introducing the research;

- “Question & Answer” as the most important moment of the event;

- Handouts and Reference Material.

E’ stato inoltre intervistato in radio e per la carta stampata in diverse occasioni negli Stati Uniti, in Gran Bretagna, Italia e Brasile incluso registrazioni dal vivo per la BBC. We are pleased to introduce “Partenope” (LUC01 CD, 2011), the brand-new, six-tracks EP album by Luca Luciano, “Masterful Clarinet!” by Musician Magazine. The project has been realised thanks to the precious contribution of the sound engineer, DJ and producer Massimo Luciano. The album is available for physical and digital distribution world-wide via CD-Baby and it is also available on Amazon (CDs and download), iTunes, Napster, Cd Universe and in exclusive at Harold Moores Records for the UK.

Continuing the journey started with the album “Clarinet” (MCPS 2008-2010), the compositions included in this release are also part of an on-going academic research that focuses on extended techniques for the contemporary repertoire and new music for solo clarinet that Luciano has also presented during the masterclasses and workshops he holds around the UK and overseas (Italy, Brazil, etc). Luciano’s aesthetics is inspired by the Italian intellectual Umberto Eco and aims at presenting 21st Century music that, paraphrasing Eco’s view on post-modernism, ”neither repudiates nor imitates either his modernist or post-modernist parents and has the music of the past centuries behind his back but not as a burden on the his shoulders”.

The core of the “Clarinet Solo Project”, is made of the two Sequenze premiered at the Bristol Cathedral in June 2009 and “Rondo’ Contemporaneo” premiered in August 2010 at St Martin in the Fields in London part of their New Music Series. Inspired by the famous line of Gustav Mahler’s, “A symphony must be like the world, it must embrace everything”, the Sequenze include sections of notated and improvised music where a “sequence” of propositions are developed by the musician during the piece. During the performance the clarinet is pushed to the edge using a wide range of styles and expressions in an imaginative journey around the world from Western European music to Afro-American or folkloristic music ofSouthern Italy, from contemporary classical music with chromatic and angular-shaped lines to heartfelt melodies. The sequenze were first recorded in 2007 and have been revised, re-performed and re-edited during the studio sessions of June 2010.

The programme is completed by a series of short, written pieces where a variety of techniques are applied (multi-phonics, growl/flutter, glissato, quarter-tones, “timbral-trillos”, etc) on scores that may well feature other effects (as in the tarantella section of “Rondo’ Contemporaneo”), or the use of the Neapolitan minor scale (as on Sequenza #1 and Rondo’ Contemporaneo) or even a short section of serial music (as on “Fragment #5”). Jazz Impromptu is a freely improvised track that includes short quotations from some of Charlie Parker’s famous tunes as a homage to the American saxophonist.

The music also shows the potentiality of the instrument endorsed by Luciano (a full Boehm System clarinet with a low Eb) with extra keys and rings that has attracted the attention of critics and enthusiasts alike.
